Sarah Wilson Author of I Quit Sugar on GetRealLive

‘I Quit Sugar’… Yes, this is something I can say with about 80% certainty… Why only 80% well, the answer is simple and it goes like this: I’m a busy mother of 3 and as much as I would love to feed my children, husband and myself perfectly 100% of the time ~ I don’t! So, 80% of the time I think I get it right and the other 20% is when I’m exhausted or simply can’t be bothered (anyone ever felt like that before?).

In saying ‘I Quit Sugar‘ for the most part I have and I feel wonderful. Where did this stem from and why did I start? Well, one of my besties, Jane Kennedy (amazing person and founder of A Girl and Her World) has been talking about sugar, fructose and a collage of other things that have, at times, totally confused me. But, the sugar thing caught my attention and for over 1 year I have been listening to Jane talk about her journey of living a sugar-free life. Finally, I started to listen and quietly did my own research. In doing so, I was introduced to a beautiful Aussie girl called, Sarah Wilson. Sarah’s story resonated with me because she simply started to experiment with something and through her determination and questioning mind, she has created a movement. Yes, #IQS or #IQuitSugar started to roll off the tongues of people around the globe. Exciting, indeed.

As someone who loves to cook and be in the kitchen I started to play. I was armed with Sarah’s book in one hand, my stick blender in another and my counter covered with new ingredients like coconut flakes, coconut cream, cacao beans and chia seeds (who knew chia seeds actually existed I was only aware of the chia pet….). Anyway, the rest is history and I am now on week 7 of my no sugar and I have no plans to turn back.

I hope you enjoy our GetRealLive conversation with  Sarah Wilson, author of I Quit Sugar.  Sarah stopped by GetRealLive to talk about making this energizing change in life!

Sarah is a journalist, tv host and blogger with an integrated voice across television, radio, magazines, newspapers and online. She’s the former editor of Cosmopolitan magazine and was the host of the first series of MasterChef Australia, the highest rating show in Australian TV history. She’s also a commentator and fill-in host on Channel 7′s Sunday Night, The Morning Show and Sunrise, and The Ten Network’s Good News Week and The Project.

Sarah is an adept social commentator, following a career that’s spanned politics, health advocacy, restaurant reviewing, opinion writing and trend forecasting. She’s also a qualified Health Coach with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York. Sarah is the author of two best-selling ebooks: I Quit Sugar: an 8-week program and the recent follow-up, I Quit Sugar Cookbook.

Spring into Fashion with Notes From A Broad

Notes From A Broad by Nicole Liboiron is a weekly commentary on Lifestyle, Fashion and Travel

It’s the time of year when THIS self-proclaimed Canadian Fashionista looks forward to shedding the layers of wool and down to don spring’s hottest looks.  The coming season’s trends run the gamut from the 60’s mod Laugh In girl silhouette to the kick-ass, leather jacket wearing femme fatale.   Interpreting the industry and runways trends can be a challenge.  Most important is to take what they may deem as hot and work it into your personal style. There is something for everyone!!!

Without a doubt, green will be the colour of the season.   There is such a spectrum of green in the stores for spring that you will find a tone that can work for you.   From the palest of blue-greens to the deepest of emeralds, find piece of fashion in that colour which works with your closet.   I’m going to be wearing out my new green suede shoes that I can’t get enough of.

On the other hand, monochrome is proving to be huge trend for spring. Whether it was done with a 60s silhouette, or stripes, or leather; black and white was trend that was fierce on the spring 2013 runways.   This is such a versatile trend and can be worn by anyone.  For me, it will be with a great pair of white jeans, a black t-shirt and my new black leather bomber jacket.

This leads me to another great spring trend: leather.  This is a fashion trend that has continued from fall and winter 2012.  Leather was back on the runways for spring but in beautiful rich colours.  It is a great investment piece and will stay in your wardrobe for years.  If you want to work this trend into your closet look for one of three pieces; a great bomber jacket (very hot for spring), a nice A-line skirt or a fabulous leather dress.

There are plenty of stripes already in the stores.  The stripes can be bold, nautical, all-American or neutral.  Designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Marc Jacobs were showing head to toe stripes on the catwalk but I think it’s better done in separates; denims with a vertical stripe or a great striped T under a lightweight blazer. Interpret this trend, like you should any other, with an interpretation that works for you.

A favourite spring trend of mine is suiting done with shorts.  Now, not just anyone can wear it, but there are enough options that a broad spectrum of women can embrace it.  Tory Burch and Michael Kors showed beautiful two-piece suits in both stripes and florals.  If you decide to embrace this trend my only recommendation is to do it with a very modest flat shoe.

One of the trends I’ll be dodging: bare midriffs and peek-a-boo cut-outs!  Many designers hit this year’s runways with daring slits, sheer fabrics and crop tops.  I am hoping we don’t see a resurgence of the Britney Spears phenomenon.

What are the top five trends for our very fashionable co-host Scotty B? .  Well, it too, is a mixed bag.  You’ll find a military inspiration with bomber jackets that hit most runways.  Brighter colours, stripes as well, and even the short suit were being shown on men.  The most notable will be that the black traditional suit is out in favour of a blue one.  A navy hue is the hottest men’s suiting colour for the season.

But please, if you see me walking down the street in a cropped blue sweater, green bomber jacket and black and white striped pants, please call Scotty B. to intervene before the crime or no crime fashion police lock me up and throw away the key.  In the end a trend is just that, a trend.  Always be true to your style.

Finding Amazing Food When Travelling with Notes From A Broad

Notes From A Broad by Nicole Liboiron is a weekly commentary on Lifestyle, Fashion and Travel

If there is one thing I love more than travelling, it’s hunting down the perfect meal while travelling. Finding great eats in a strange town can lead you to some of the best adventures and memories a vacation can bring.   I honestly believe you can’t experience the culture of the place you visit, until you ‘taste’ the culture of the place you visit.  Unfortunately finding a great restaurant in a foreign land can be a challenge. However, just a few useful tips can help go you go beyond the mediocre dining experience.

First and foremost, you need to be willing to go beyond the hotel doors.  Are there restaurants in your hotel? Probably.  However, there is a greater chance that you won’t have a truly great eating experience unless you leave the confines of where you’re staying.  Walking through the neighborhood will allow you to stumble upon that hidden gem of a restaurant. Look in windows, read menus, check out the dining crowd.  It’s also best to venture off the beaten path, beyond the touristy areas, in order to get a better price and a better meal.

Your best resource is a local.  Talk to your cab driver, the lady beside you on the bus, or the girl behind the cash register.  Just like at home, the locals know the best places to eat.  Remember, this doesn’t always mean the hotel concierge.  They often have a reason for sending you in a certain direction.  I’ve never been steered wrong by a cop.  One of New York’s finest led me to one of the best dessert experiences of my life.

If you can’t speak the language then watch where people gather or where there’s a lineup.  Sometimes it pays to follow the crowds.  Avoid places filled with similar camera and map-toting tourists like you, and head for those places filled with locals.  If there is a wait, it’s usually a good sign.

As you know, I ‘m a firm believer in scouring the Internet.  Any major city around the world will have an on-line guide for restaurants.  If you’re lucky there will even be an app for your smart phone.  In North America we have OpenTable, Urbanspoon, Eat Canada, Happy Cow (for vegetarians) and Yelp to name a few.  If you’re an avid Twitter user simply type in your location followed by the word restaurant and you’ll be surprised at the results. More importantly, your technology should include a GPS that can assist you in getting in and maybe out of places; if need be.

And my final tip: if it’s offered, eat it, or at least try it.  Sitting down and breaking bread with locals can bridge any language or cultural barrier.  Food, and sitting down to enjoy it, is the one thing we all have in common.  Whether its guinea pig in Peru, chicken hearts in Brazil, or conch in the Caribbean I’ve always dug right in only to be rewarded, not so much by the flavour of the food, but friendships and memories that accompanied it.

Food is the commonality that brings cultures around the world together.
